Winter Car Care Tips

Winter Car Care Tips To Keep You Safe On The Road!

Met Éireann has warned temperatures will plummet this weekend with sleet and snow, along with icy conditions so here are a few tips to keep you safe and your vehicle running smoothly.
  • Check Your Battery

Cold weather can make it harder for your car battery to perform at its best, as low temperatures reduce its ability to hold a charge. It’s a good idea to have a volt test performed to ensure your battery is in good condition.

  • Monitor Tyre Pressure

As temperatures decrease, the air inside your tyres contracts, leading to lower pressure. Low tyre pressure can cause uneven wear, reducing the lifespan of your tyres, and may also decrease your car’s fuel efficiency by increasing rolling resistance.

  • Check Your Headlights

Check your headlights before your set out at night to ensure that all bulbs work and that there is nothing covering them. Clean headlights improve visibility, helping you see the road clearly and allowing other drivers to see you.

  • Keep Your Petrol and Washer Fluid Filled

During colder weather, it’s a good idea to keep your petrol tank full to avoid getting stuck out in the cold. Make sure your washer fluid is topped up, to ensure your windshield stays clean and clear in icy or snowy weather.

  • Check and Fill Coolant

Ensure your coolant is at the correct level and check for any leaks. Add antifreeze and replace your coolant with a proper mix of antifreeze and water (50/50).

  • Keep Your Car Clean

Moisture and road salt are a corrosive combination and will eat away at your paint. Since paint protects your car’s body, once its gone the aluminium underneath can become damaged. Applying wax to your car is the best option to protect from corrosive materials.
